Cookie Policy
The complete list. Four items in total, and only one of them runs without your permission.
1. What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store and hand back on your next request. Local storage does much the same job with more room and no automatic expiry. Both let a site remember something between page loads — which is useful for remembering that you already answered a consent banner, and equally useful for tracking people across the web, which is why the law treats the second case differently from the first.
2. Our approach
This is a static website. It has no login, no shopping basket and no personalisation, so it needs almost nothing stored on your device to work. Nothing that is not strictly necessary is set until you press Accept all. Closing or ignoring the banner is treated as a refusal, and the banner does not use pre-ticked boxes.

This item never leaves your browser. Under the ePrivacy Directive and the PECR it is exempt from consent because it exists solely to give effect to your own preference.

We use this to answer questions like “does anyone read the incubation timeline?” We have set the shortest data retention Google offers (14 months) and enabled IP anonymisation.

We advertise the atlas itself and nothing else. We do not host third-party display advertising, we run no affiliate links, and we do not upload email addresses or other customer identifiers to Google.
6. Google Consent Mode v2
Rather than simply not loading Google's tag, we use Consent Mode v2, which tells the tag what it is and is not allowed to do. Until you decide, every consent parameter is set to denied:

We also enable ads_data_redaction, so that while consent is denied any
network request Google's tag does make is stripped of advertising identifiers.
7. Other third parties
Typefaces are served from Google Fonts, which does not set cookies but does receive the IP address of the request in order to deliver the font file. Google states that this address is not used for profiling and is logged only for operational purposes. All other assets — images, stylesheets and scripts — are served from our own domain, so no other third party sees your visit.

Use the button here or in the footer of any page. Changing your answer applies immediately and revokes consent for future processing.
In your browser
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, and most offer a stricter mode for third-party cookies specifically. Blocking all cookies will not break this site. Useful instructions: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge.
Everywhere
The Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on disables Analytics on every site you visit, and Google My Ad Center controls ad personalisation across Google's products. We also honour the Global Privacy Control signal if your browser sends one.
9. Changes
